With eyes set on Paris Olympics, Kombo hopes to make it to the second World Olympic Qualification tournament in Thailand in May
Mwinyi Kombo was, on Saturday 6 April, crowned champion in the Kenya Open Championships featherweight as the competition hosted at Uhuru Park over the weekend came to a close.
Kombo defeated overnight fan favourite, schoolboy Chris Juma, who had shocked some experienced boxers, including 2019 African Games silver medalist Shaffi Bakari of Police and Amos Amenya to book his final slot.
Kombo who has a burning ambition to represent Kenya at the Paris Olympics and hopes to make it to the second World Olympic Qualification tournament in Thailand in May won on a split decision.
In the lead-up to the final, Mombasa-born Kombo has picked a first-round knockout victory over KDF's international boxer Sam Njau who was the favouirte in the semis.
Kombo was fully stretched by Juma, especially towards the end of rounds two and three, withstanding the teenager’s onslaught for victory.
Meanwhile, BoxGirls’ Emily "Ring Princess" Juma toyed with Ann Wanjiru to become the new Kenya Open flyweight champion.
Emily put up a brilliant show to contain the rugged Wanjiru whose performance was nothing but a stinker. She did shadowboxing for the better part of the fight. Emily has now made it two wins each in their fourth meeting.
Lenox Francis won his welterweight bout without throwing a punch. The eagerly awaited rematch between Nairobi's Lenox and Joseph Shigali of Police was not held. The latter was a no-show, having been ruled out on medical grounds.
